Tame Impala: Innerspeaker

21 Jul

Tame Impala’s debut album, Innerspeaker, has reverb proportions of the right aptitude, which  bled harmoniously with an acid jazz percussion reminiscent of Dungen’s  2005 release, Ta Det Lugnt. The loner’s anthem,  Solitude is Bliss is a psychedelic assertion of coveted personal awareness worthy of a comparison to Ray Davies’ sincere individualist approach to song crafting. While their  lyrical prowess is somewhat restrained, we confidently anticipate  a more expansive union of the components of  their musical identity. A band Cult City is eagerly watching.

Ariel Pink: Before Today

10 Jun

Before Today is a slip down the rabbit hole!  Yeeee!!!  Racing  baroque melodies, ghostly manic lyrics, Tarzan vocals and pleadings with a tranny are just are few of the trips  along the way. The track  Round and Round bounces  with a chorus  echoing  a   love-lorn proclamation  layered over ambient psych funk and gritty pop. Whoa. Yes,we did. Yes, were serious. No, we’re not on drugs…why, do you have some?

P.S: The vinyl comes with 3 free digital downloads.

PRESS RELEASE
Los Angeles, California, May 25, 2010

We are reaching out to get your ear for a minute about this critical situation in Arizona.

If you haven’t heard, the Arizona state legislature passed a bill (SB 1070) that was signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer that legalizes and sanctions racial profiling. Straight up.

It forces the cops to hunt down and target anyone they “reasonably suspect” that may be undocumented. And if the people they harass don’t have proof that they were born in the U.S., they can be detained and arrested. This must be stopped.

Fans of our music, our stories, our films and our words can be pulled over and harassed every day because they are brown or black, or for the way they speak, or for the music they listen to. People who are poor like some of us used to be could be forced to live in a constant state of fear while just doing what they can to find work and survive. This law opens the door for them to be shaked down, or even worse, detained and deported while just trying to travel home from school, from home to work, or when they just roll out with their friends.

Some of us grew up dealing with racial profiling, but this law (SB 1070) takes it to a whole new low. If other states follow the direction of the Arizona government, we could be headed towards a pre-civil rights era reality. This unjust law was set into motion by the same Arizona government that refused to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. day as a national holiday.

When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, they arrested her. As a result, people got together and said we are not going to ride the bus until they change the law. It was this courageous action that sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. What if we got together, signed a collective letter saying, “we’re not going to ride the bus”, saying we are not going to comply. We are not going to play in Arizona. We are going to boycott Arizona?!

Signed,

Zack de la Rocha

Here’s a list of the courageous artists who have taken a stand for civil and human rights in this collective decision to boycott Arizona:

Cypress Hill
Juanes
Conor Oberst
Los Tigres del Norte
Rage Against the Machine
Cafe Tacvba
Micheal Moore
Kanye West
Calle 13
Joe Satriani
Serj Tankian
Rise Against
Ozomatli
Sabertooth Tiger
Massive Attack
One Day as a Lion
Street Sweeper Social Club
Spank Rock
Juanes
Sonic Youth
Tenacious D

We are asking artists the world over to stand with us, and not allow our collective economic power to be used to aid and abet civil and human rights violations that will be caused by Arizona’s odious law.

Cult City: Signing the petition only takes a few minutes. Do it; because somewhere a white republican is dying for a restaurant job.

The Purrs: Tearing Down Paisley Garden

25 May

Don’t fight it, just do it right. If you’re experiencing your very own summer of hate this year, you’ll most certainly want to add the Purrs latest album to your rotation. On Pie In The Sky,The Purrs  articulate the landscape of American culture in all its homogeneous extremity. “But in this wasteland/There’s nothing that anyone would call home. ” The album is not entirely, ahem, unpatriotic, however. There are   beautifully pessimistic songs aplenty. I’m Slipping is a lackadaisical confession of one’s inability to be a dependable lover. “Maybe somehow I will get back my head/But I don’t think so.” On the tambourine heavy and  super distorted  Only Dreaming (a Red Lory  Yellow Lory cover) ,we can recall how well we treat those closest to us while facing a self perpetuated isolation that is best cast by  the shadow of  being in love.

Dum Dum Girls: I Will Be

17 Apr

Dum Dum Girls is a commanding rock group of beautiful women who throw  sun drenched surf rock in your face. The danceable songs on I Will Be beckon beach parties, and reminisce of summer’s past.  Inside: simple, catchy hooks play with perfectly placed tambourine,  gritty distortion and  valiant lyrics  full of slacker charm. In contrast, tracks Blank Girl and Rest of Our lives exhibit a lyrically committed song craft, proving  this is no auxillary album effort.

Beach House: Teen Dream

1 Mar

Beach House’s third full length studio release, Teen Dream,  delivers  a beautifully epic masterpiece. The entire album  emerges with a fresher intensity with out surrendering their artisitc identity. 10 Mile Stereo stands out as a song which boldly exhibits Beach House’s growth. Commanding  percussion, ambient  synthesizing  and confident lyricism poised with Legrand’s raspy, soulful vocals, strongly engage and coalesce into an unforgettable power track.

The 10 track vinyl album  comes with a free full length CD and DVD.
